Take small steps and take lots of them in the right direction
Some people will have you believe there’s one best way to build a website or application — nonsense. Sure, there are plenty of bad ways to create a website or application, but saying there’s just one, well…
That’s like saying there’s one best way to cook an egg.
Instead of arguing about which platform or technology is better than any another, spending weeks deciding which version of your logo looks best and getting distracted by a million other details that simply don’t matter in the early stages of your project — follow these simple steps.
The Steps
The truth is there are lots of great ways to make a website or application — but it’s easy to get it wrong.
Follow these steps to avoid getting sidetracked and be sure to get a good result for every project.
01 Audience — Research who it’s for
If you haven’t already worked out who your website or application is for you, you can’t possibly know if they need what you’re hoping to offer. Once you understand your audience, you can work out how best to serve them.
If your audience doesn’t like eggs, you’re wasting your time cooking eggs.
02 Purpose — Agree what it does
Do you know what your website is going to offer? Do you know what your web application is going to deliver? Once you’re certain you’re offering what your audience wants, hone the idea and make sure your offer is better value than your competitors’.
If your audience is hungry and likes eggs, offer them eggs.
03 Content — Select your ingredients
The ingredients for your website are the words, photos and videos that will communicate with your audience. You should focus all of your attention on gathering these raw ingredients before you start thinking about how you present them.
If your raw ingredients are rotten, your dish will be ruined.
04 Design — Create your offer
With the right ingredients, the right offer and a full understanding of what your audience wants (and how they want it), you can begin to brainstorm the best ways to present your offering. This is the land of branding and user experience design.
Are you serving fried egg on toast or a Michelin star eggstravaganza?
05 Technology — Develop your vision
With answers to all the previous questions, deciding on a platform and starting the build signifies the end is in sight. It might be a long way off, but all the important decisions have been made and now it’s time to turn your dream into reality.
Time to grab a pan and turn up the heat — eggs are on the menu!
